Chiang Mai literally means new city even it was founded more than 700 years ago by 3 kings : King Mangrai from Chiang Rai, King Ngammuang from Payao and King Ramkhamhaeng from Sukhothai.

Chiang Mai is at a very good location. The terrain is mainly plains, surrounded by high mountains and along the banks of the important Mae Ping River that flows through the center of the city.

This glamorous city is not only the capital of northern Thailand but also the center of culture and commerce of these regions from 1296 to 1932. Now, it combines with Thailand and became 1 of 76 thai provinces.

Situated between north latitude 17-21 and east longitude 98-99. Chiang Mai borders Myanmar on the north, Lamphun and Tak Provinces on the south, Chiang Rai, Lampang and Lamphun Provinces on the east and Mae Hong Son Province on the west.

Population : 1,603,220 (latest surveyed on the year 2003).

Religion :  94.14 % Budhism.

Size of the ground :  20,107.057 sq kms. East-west 138 kms, north – south 320 kms.
