Chiang Mai literally means new city even it was founded more than 700 years ago by 3 kings : King Mangrai from Chiang Rai, King Ngammuang from Payao and King Ramkhamhaeng from Sukhothai.
Chiang Mai is at a very good location. The terrain is mainly plains, surrounded by high mountains and along the banks of the important Mae Ping River that flows through the center of the city.
